Why can non-firm power create risk for high-uptime compute loads?

Non-Firm Power and AI Data Centers

Short Answer

Non-firm power can create risk for AI data centers because access to power may be exposed to curtailment, congestion, or lower service priority during grid stress.

Key Data

AreaImpactNotes
Firm ServiceHigher CertaintyFirm service has stronger reservation priority
Non-Firm ServiceHigher RiskNon-firm arrangements may not support high-uptime operations
Curtailment ExposureMaterialInterruptions can affect redundancy, backup power, and economics

Notes

Non-firm service may appear useful when firm power is hard to secure. But AI data centers and other constant loads have different operating requirements than flexible or interruptible loads.

For high-uptime compute, the issue is not only price. The issue is whether power can be delivered reliably enough to support the operating model.
